Original Gecode is the preserved project solver before the algorithm improvements. Auto + race uses the current solver with bounded strategy exploration; configured uses the same current build with presets chosen for each family before this run. Each headline size passed two repetitions and every knapsack variant. These are sampled boundaries, not absolute solver limits: irregular difficulty leaves untested sizes unknown.

Racing may increase total CPU work or solve time. Several seconds—or a longer exploration window—can be worthwhile if an early trial finds a substantially better search strategy. This study charges exploration and the selected restart to the same ten-second budget.

The time curves retain the same logarithmic scale, run ranges and unfinished markers. Shared points use identical inputs. Missing points were not measured; timeouts have no completion-time estimate. Discovery uses one run; boundary confirmation uses two. Knapsack ranges include both profit variants.

An earlier 60-run experiment with generic search ordering was rejected: completion did not improve and a limited knapsack solution became worse. All pilot results remain in the download, separately from the accepted study. This same panel informed development, so it is an adaptive regression comparison, not an untouched holdout.

Every returned witness is checked against the original problem. Finding the known best value does not mean the solver proved optimality. The table retains all three outcomes; no failed or limited run is retried.

Both versions match the original expected output in 12/12 runs. That is an output oracle, not an independent mathematical proof. Median internal search is only about 0.02–0.18 ms; process startup, loading, parsing and output dominate these 4–11 ms wall times. The build-layout change prevents attributing the full difference to solver algorithms.

04 / REPRODUCIBILITY & DOCUMENTATION

The evidence behind the page.

What is measured

The current curves time the complete solver call, including optional algorithm work. External times also include startup and loading. Results use repeated runs on the same machine; each successful answer is checked. These small panels are kept separate because they use different models and solver routes. They are not combined into an overall solver score.

What is preserved

Original binaries, input hashes, solver versions, commands, every run outcome, and time limits are retained. No benchmark result is replaced with a reference solution. The original checkout remains unchanged.

How to interpret a change

Reported percentage changes describe observed medians. Cache state, startup and ordinary desktop activity affect short runs. There is no claim of statistical significance, broad industrial speedup, memory improvement or commercial-solver parity.

Commands behind the final comparison

356 measured solves, 3 loader checks and one parser rejection. The two compiler commands were captured. Solver commands are reconstructed from the frozen runner and saved records; a complete shell or environment history was not recorded. These commands describe the study, including its interruptions, rather than a fresh-run recipe.

Run phases from the solver checkout, shown as ${GECODE_ROOT} below. Driver builds reuse existing solver libraries. The optimized library has since been rebuilt; exact replay requires the historical binary matching the recorded hash. The saved measurements are unchanged.

The ratio calculation is a new analysis recipe using saved observations; it runs no solver. Size and speed independently select the better of automatic and configured. Speed uses median solve time, excluding process startup. Most improved timings at the original maximum have one run per instance, so these are observed ratios, not guaranteed speedups.
